Hi John,
It is possible to create sub-types for inventory items by going to Inventory > Tools & options > other stock item sub-types > + New item sub-type. Then when creating an inventory type, you can set the type to ‘other’ and the sub-type to your custom sub-type. I have attached a screenshot for your reference.
If you are creating equipment though, I would recommend doing this by going to Production > View > All Equipment > + Add equipment > Add other equipment.

Your request for equipment logging - Equipment logging is scheduled for Q1 this year if this is why you are wanting to set up your equipment as an inventory item.
