Our state requires that we pay customers a 2.5 cent handling fee in addition to the 10 cent deposit for every can/bottle they return. It would be very helpful for accounting if this could be done automatically rather than as an additional return fee in quickbooks.
I would suggest enhancing the Container Deposit Scheme to allow the total credit amount to include the cost to run the scheme as an additional credit to the customer on the note; basically, adding a checkbox “Should the cost of administering the scheme be added to the credit note when containers are returned” and then updating the underlying logic to increase the value of the note by that amount. Or something along those lines.
We are legally required to maintain a separate bank account that we put the container deposits into (which we have to do monthly). The law in CT allows us to take both the deposit amount and the handling fee amount against the bank account, but the accounting for the charge is $0.10 against the liability account and 0.025 against a handling expense account. We could probably figure things out in reporting when we file, as long as the necessary reports are available in order to keep this simpler.
If you edit your container deposit scheme, you should see a new field of Amount to return to customer. If this is populated, this figure will be returned to the customer instead of the Charge per container value.
