Default beer batch Final Gravity to the last gravity reading (with a setting to disable)

The system asks me to indicate when I have the beer’s final gravity. Even a homebrewer knows that final gravity is simply the last gravity reading. I don’t understand why the system can’t use the last recorded gravity as the final gravity.

I dunno, the latest gravity reading isn’t necessarily the last reading or final gravity. How does Breww know there’s not going to be another reading added?

Always will be the last reading, even if it’s the first reading. We don’t have to say it’s over to the system since the last reading will be always the final gravity.

Is there any situation that this is not true? I can’t see it.

If I add a load of fruit purée, take a reading and pasteurise?

Final gravity is the gravity at the end of fermentation, pretty much, but all kinds of things affecting gravity might happen after that. Some of them might even affect the OG.

Breww does use the latest reading to come up with the calculated abv (if there’s no FG indicated) I think? I.e. FG is optional, really.

I have some beers where I add purée, but I add it after fermentation. It affects the gravity, but not the ABV measurement. Do you add it before fermentation?

Well no, that’s the point, the last gravity isn’t necessarily the final gravity. I think we need the brewer to be able to indicate which reading is FG. Similarly, knockout gravity (which we can opt to have Breww copy to fermentation readings), isn’t necessarily OG (although it often will be).

Thanks for the suggestion, Bruno.

As Jon points out, this would sometimes be incorrect, so we cannot blindly implement this feature as requested. We could create a setting that defaulted the FG to the last reading, but it would need to be possible to turn this off for a batch; either initially, or possibly after you know fermentation has finished and before you add the purée (to continue this example). I can certainly see how this would save time on most batches and so would be a useful addition.

I’ll rename the request thread to reflect this being a setting, so hopefully others will find it useful and be able to vote it up the priority list too. Thank you.

I suggested this because it would save time. Before Breww, we used B30, which had this feature. The purpose of measuring OG and FG is to determine ABV. After fermentation, even if we add purée or dilute before packaging, we still need an accurate alcohol content. Resetting FG after adding purée will produce an incorrect ABV.
